TRAVEL TIPS

Bus Travel

Intercity buses depart from Park Station in Braamfontein in the Johannesburg city center. Greyhound, Translux, and Intercape Mainliner operate extensive routes around the country. The Baz Bus operates a hop-on, hop-off door-to-door service, stopping at backpackers' hostels between Johannesburg and Durban or Jo'burg and Cape Town via the Drakensberg. You can buy Greyhound, Intercape Mainliner, and Translux bus tickets through Computicket. Airfares with budget airlines in South Africa, such as Mango, or Kulula are more expensive than bus fares, but traveling by plane is much more efficient and comfortable, because the distances in South Africa can be vast. Be sure to book as far in advance as you can if you are going to fly or go by bus, as tickets can get more expensive as you approach the date of travel, and during peak holiday times (especially over Easter in April and December/January) tickets can sell out.
