TRAVEL TIPS

Getting Here and Around

Air Travel

Inagua has one airport: Matthew Town Airport (IGA). Bahamasair has flights on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from Nassau. Hotels will arrange airport transportation. Generally someone from even the smallest hotel will meet you at the airport, but taxis sometimes meet incoming flights.

Boat Travel

The M/V Lady Mathilda sails once a week or three times a month, first to Abraham's Bay, and then to Matthew Town, Inagua. Not only is the boat characteristically cluttered with all sorts of cargo, the service is sporadic—so, always call the captain on the scheduled sailing day, Thursday, or the Potter's Cay Dockmaster's Office in Nassau to check sailing times. She departs from Potter's Cay in Nassau and the journey in good seas takes 36 hours and is a rather pricey $100 one-way. If bad weather is approaching, she may not even leave harbor, skipping a week and leaving you stranded. The whole process is an authentic Bahamian adventure. Take your camera!

Car Travel

You can rent a car for about $80 a day, but there are few rental cars on the island, so call in advance. If you are driving outside Matthew Town, you will need an SUV or truck to navigate dirt roads. If you plan to stay in Matthew Town, you can easily walk everywhere.

Ingraham Rent-A-Car. This is the biggest rental service on the island but always make sure the car is in good running order before choosing one. The $85 daily rate includes gas, but there's an additional $300 deposit. Great Inagua Island. 242/339–1677.
